ACA Health Insurance Calculator

I built this calculator to find out quickly what an ACA plan would cost me after the subsidy, which plans still cover me when I travel outside my home area, and which ones cover me outside the U.S., whether for emergencies only or for more. There is no account to create and nothing to sign in to. Most ACA calculators I tried only show the price and the subsidy, not how the plans cover you when you travel.

Just out of curiosity, I also wanted to compare up to three ZIP codes side by side, to see how my cost and the plans would change from one state to another.

The numbers are estimates based on public CMS data. I use them as a starting point, then go straight to HealthCare.gov to confirm the price and enroll.

These numbers are estimates only. This is not insurance advice, not tax advice and not legal advice. I do not sell insurance and I am not paid by any insurer or broker. The answers you enter are used only to figure your estimate, and I do not save them. Confirm prices and enroll on HealthCare.gov or your state's official marketplace.

Step 5 of 6

You will enter your MAGI in the next step.

Step 6 of 6
What will your 2027 MAGI be?

The subsidy is based on your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) for the whole year.

$

The standard deduction and itemized deductions do not lower your MAGI.

What counts toward MAGI

IRA and 401(k) withdrawals, Roth conversions, capital gains (even gains taxed at 0%), options premium, dividends, all interest including tax-exempt interest, wages, self-employment profit, rental income, pensions and all of your Social Security benefits. Income you exclude with the FEIE counts too.

This is not tax advice. Consult with your tax adviser.

What lowers MAGI

HSA contributions you make yourself, deductible contributions to a traditional IRA (you need earned income, such as wages or self-employment profit, to contribute), pre-tax contributions to a SEP IRA or solo 401(k) (these need self-employment profit), half of your self-employment tax, the self-employed health insurance deduction, student loan interest, and net capital losses up to $3,000. Traditional 401(k) and HSA contributions taken from a paycheck also lower MAGI. If you start from your gross salary, subtract them. If you start from Box 1 of your W-2, they are already taken out, so do not subtract them again. Roth contributions do not lower MAGI.

How to fill this out

Coverage year
From November through mid-April, you can choose between the current year and the next one. Pick the year your coverage would start.

Your age
Enter your age when the coverage starts. The calculator covers ages 18 to 64, because Medicare starts at 65.

Do you use tobacco?
Choose Yes if you used tobacco four or more times a week on average in the past six months. Religious or ceremonial use does not count. Many plans charge tobacco users more, and the results show how much that adds.

Are you married or single?
If you are married, enter your spouse’s age and whether your spouse will be on the same plan. Married couples need to file a joint tax return to get the premium tax credit. Your spouse counts in your household and their income counts toward your MAGI, even if they are not on the plan.

Children you will cover
Choose how many children you will cover, up to six, and enter each child’s age. Children can stay on a parent’s plan until they turn 26. Only the three oldest children under 21 add to the premium.

Domicile ZIP code
Enter the ZIP code of the address your plan would be based on. As a full-time traveler, I use the ZIP code of my domicile address. If the ZIP code covers more than one county, pick yours from the list.

Compare with other ZIP codes (optional)
Check this box to add up to two more ZIP codes, such as an address in another mail service state. The results show what the same household would pay at each one and how their plans compare for travel.

Which plan do you want to price?
Pick the lowest-cost bronze, lowest-cost silver, benchmark silver or lowest-cost gold plan. Your subsidy is always figured from the benchmark silver plan, the second-cheapest silver plan in your area, no matter which plan you pick.

Which incomes get a subsidy?
There is nothing to fill in on this step. It shows which incomes qualify for a subsidy for your household in your state, so you can see where you stand before you enter your MAGI.

Expected MAGI
Enter your expected modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) for the whole coverage year, and include your spouse’s income if you are married. The standard deduction and itemized deductions do not lower your MAGI. The two lists under the box, What counts toward MAGI and What lowers MAGI, show what to include. This is not tax advice, so I check my own number with a tax adviser.
